In 1793 the Republic re-cut the day itself: 10 decimal hours, each of 100 minutes, each of 100 seconds. Vendémiaire runs that clock live (smooth, digital or as an ordinary 12-hour face) beside the date it belongs to.
A year that honours a thing each day
The Revolution replaced the saints' days with nature: every day of the year is dedicated to a plant, an animal, a tool or a mineral. The twelve months are named for their weather and work: Vendémiaire for the grape harvest, Brumaire for the mists, Thermidor for the summer heat.
